The Doctorate Program in Natural Sciences at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna focuses on the theoretical and experimental deepening of scientific approaches related to the intersection of art and cultural heritage issues. Students engage with both methodological and thematic challenges emerging from scientific and technological investigations in the arts.
The program is organized over six semesters, corresponding to 180 ECTS credits. Students are required to complete a minimum of 14 semester hours of coursework, including dissertation seminars and electives linked to their dissertation.
Graduates gain competencies in research methods within natural and technical sciences, particularly applied to art and cultural heritage preservation. This includes critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the ability to conduct independent research.

The level of legalisation your certificates need depends on your country of origin:
Apostille
If your country is part of the Hague Apostille Convention, an Apostille from the competent authority of the issuing country is sufficient.
No legalisation
A small number of countries have a bilateral agreement with Austria and need no further legalisation.
Full diplomatic legalisation
For all other countries: the full chain — pre-certification by the issuing country's authorities (e.g. Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs), then legalisation by the competent Austrian representation (embassy/consulate).
Translations are usually done after legalisation. Check the required order with the issuing authorities and the Austrian representation.
