Proof of funds, explained

Proof of funds trips up more applications than almost anything else. The amount changes yearly, so always confirm the current figure with the authority handling your application.

The amounts (2026)

You must show funds for twelve months in advance: EUR 722.58/month if you are under 24, or EUR 1,308.39/month if you are 24 or over (roughly EUR 8,670 and EUR 15,700 for the year). If your rent exceeds EUR 386.43/month you must show extra funds. These OeAD figures change yearly — confirm the current ones before applying.

Acceptable proof

The money must sit in a savings book or bank account in your own name that is accessible from Austria.

  • A savings book or bank account in your name
  • A declaration of guarantee (Haftungserklärung) from someone resident in the EU
  • A scholarship confirmation
  • Traveller's cheques
  • Bank statements (last 6 months) showing the origin of the funds
