Cost of living in Austria

A realistic monthly budget for students — rent, food, transport, insurance — and how the cities compare.

6 min read

Public-university tuition in Austria is low (€726.72/semester for non-EU students), so your real budget is living costs. Planning these early also matters because you must prove sufficient funds for the residence permit.

A realistic monthly budget

Most students get by on roughly €950–€1,400 per month, depending heavily on the city and your rent:

  • Accommodation: €300–€650 (dorm room)
  • Food & groceries: €200–€300
  • Health insurance: about €79 (ÖGK student self-insurance)
  • Public transport: €30–€75 (cheaper with a semester ticket)
  • Phone, internet & essentials: €30–€60
  • Study materials & leisure: €100–€200

For the residence permit you must show roughly €722.58/month (under 24) or €1,308.39/month (24+) for twelve months. See the proof-of-funds guide for the exact rules.

How the cities compare

  • Vienna — most options but the priciest; great transport makes outer districts affordable
  • Graz, Linz — noticeably cheaper, strong student towns
  • Innsbruck, Salzburg — pricier due to tourism and tight housing
  • Klagenfurt — the most affordable, with lakeside summers

Ways to spend less

  • Apply early for a student dorm — usually cheaper and bills-inclusive
  • Buy a semester ticket for public transport
  • Cook at home and shop at discount supermarkets (Hofer, Lidl, Penny)
  • Use your student ID (ISIC / university card) for discounts
  • Consider a part-time job — up to 20 hours per week is allowed
