The Aufenthaltsbewilligung Student in 2026 — the two-step embassy process, the €218 fee, exact financial thresholds (€722.58 / €1,308.39), the excess-rent rule, and the 16-ECTS renewal requirement.

For academic stays over six months, non-EU/EEA nationals need the "Residence Permit – Student" (Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Studierende). It's a two-step process: you apply at the Austrian embassy in your home country and wait there; once approved, you receive a 4-month Visa D to enter Austria and collect the physical card.

At a glance

Application fee
€218 (2026), non-refundable
Where to apply
Austrian embassy/consulate at home, in person
Processing
Forwarded to the Austrian authority (e.g. MA 35), typically 6–12 weeks
Funds, under 24
€722.58/month → €8,670.96 for 12 months
Funds, 24+
€1,308.39/month → €15,700.68 for 12 months
Renewal bar
16 ECTS or 8 semester hours per academic year

The two-step process

  1. Submit in person at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
  2. The embassy forwards your file to the Austrian residence authority (MA 35 in Vienna, the Bezirkshauptmannschaft elsewhere) — expect 6–12 weeks.
  3. On approval, the embassy issues a 4-month Visa D; you travel to Austria.
  4. Register your address within 3 working days of moving in, then collect your card at the immigration office.

The 2026 financial thresholds

You must prove funds for 12 months in advance, in an account in your own name, accessible from Austria, backed by a 6-month transaction history. Sudden unexplained deposits are flagged.

| Who | Per month (2026) | 12-month total | |---|---|---| | Under 24 | €722.58 | €8,670.96 | | 24 and older | €1,308.39 | €15,700.68 | | Couple (both in Austria) | €2,064.12 | €24,769.44 | | Per additional child | €201.88 | €2,422.56 |

The excess-rent rule

The calculation assumes housing costs of €386.43/month (the ASVG "free station" value for 2026). If your documented rent is higher, you must prove the excess × 12 months on top.

Worked example (25-year-old, €500 rent in Vienna)

Base €1,308.39 + excess rent €113.57 (€500 − €386.43) = €1,421.96/month, so €17,063.52 to prove for the year.

Accepted proof: personal savings with history, parental/sponsor guarantees (salary slips + notarized declaration), a Haftungserklärung by an EU resident, or an official scholarship confirmation. Full detail with bank-letter templates in our proof of funds guide.

First application — what to bring

0/8 done

Travel health insurance covering at least €30,000 bridges the gap between entry and the start of your Austrian student insurance — see the health insurance guide.

Renewal: prove you're actually studying

The permit is issued for 12 months; apply for renewal up to 3 months before expiry, from inside Austria. You'll need:

  • Academic success: 16 ECTS credits or 8 semester hours from the past academic year (1 Oct – 30 Sep) — this is the single most important number of your first year;
  • confirmation of continued enrolment (Inskriptionsbestätigung);
  • in practice, authorities may also request a credit-bureau extract (e.g. KSV 1870) showing no outstanding domestic debts.

Plan your ECTS around the renewal

16 ECTS is roughly three courses per year — very achievable, but exam-heavy programs back-load credits. Bank at least one semester's worth early so a failed exam can't jeopardize your permit.

How much money do I need to show for the Austrian student permit in 2026?
€722.58 per month if you're under 24 (€8,670.96 for 12 months) or €1,308.39 per month if 24 or older (€15,700.68) — plus the amount by which your rent exceeds €386.43/month, times twelve.
What does the residence permit cost?
€218 in 2026, payable in full at submission and non-refundable. Additional smaller fees can apply at issuance.
Can I apply for the permit after arriving in Austria?
As a rule, no — first-time applicants apply in person at the Austrian embassy in their country of residence and wait for approval there. You then enter on a 4-month Visa D.
How long does processing take?
Commonly 6–12 weeks after the embassy forwards your file to the Austrian authority; peak season can take longer. Apply as soon as you hold your admission letter.
What happens if I don't earn 16 ECTS in a year?
The renewal can be refused. If a genuine obstacle (illness, etc.) caused the shortfall, document it — authorities can accept substantiated exceptions.
Do EU citizens need this permit?
No — EU/EEA/Swiss citizens register locally (Anmeldebescheinigung within 4 months) instead.
