German language requirements & how to learn

When you need German, which certificates count (ÖSD, Goethe, telc, ÖIF), and how to reach the level your program asks for.

6 min read

Plenty of Austrian master's programs are taught entirely in English — but German opens up far more programs, makes daily life easier, and helps with part-time work. Here's what you actually need.

Do you need German?

  • English-taught programs — usually no German required for admission (English B2/C1)
  • Bilingual (EN/DE) programs — German B2 is common
  • German-taught programs — typically German B2 or C1
  • Daily life, jobs and bureaucracy — German always helps, even when not required

Use Match my level

On the Programs page, set your German and English levels — the finder shows only programs you actually qualify for, so you never discover a hidden C1 German requirement too late.

Certificates that count

Austrian universities generally accept recognised CEFR-aligned certificates:

  • ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch) — the Austrian standard
  • Goethe-Zentrum / Goethe-Institut certificates
  • telc Deutsch
  • ÖIF certificates
  • University-specific language exams in some cases

Understanding the levels (CEFR)

  • A1–A2 — basic everyday phrases
  • B1 — independent user; manage routine situations
  • B2 — the common admission threshold for German-taught programs
  • C1 — advanced; required by some programs and most humanities

University Preparation Programmes

If you're admitted on condition of supplementary exams, a Vorstudienlehrgang (preparation programme) can get you to the required German level — and it can support a Residence Permit – Student.
