Plenty of Austrian master's programs are taught entirely in English — but German opens up far more programs, makes daily life easier, and helps with part-time work. Here's what you actually need.
Do you need German?
- English-taught programs — usually no German required for admission (English B2/C1)
- Bilingual (EN/DE) programs — German B2 is common
- German-taught programs — typically German B2 or C1
- Daily life, jobs and bureaucracy — German always helps, even when not required
Use Match my level
On the Programs page, set your German and English levels — the finder shows only programs you actually qualify for, so you never discover a hidden C1 German requirement too late.
Certificates that count
Austrian universities generally accept recognised CEFR-aligned certificates:
- ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch) — the Austrian standard
- Goethe-Zentrum / Goethe-Institut certificates
- telc Deutsch
- ÖIF certificates
- University-specific language exams in some cases
Understanding the levels (CEFR)
- A1–A2 — basic everyday phrases
- B1 — independent user; manage routine situations
- B2 — the common admission threshold for German-taught programs
- C1 — advanced; required by some programs and most humanities
