How to choose the right program in Austria

Choosing where to study is the highest-leverage decision you'll make. Get it right and the visa, housing, and settling-in steps all become easier. Here's how to build a shortlist you can trust.

Start with the language of instruction

Austria has more English-taught programs than most people expect — especially at the master's level. If your German isn't strong yet, filter to English or English + German programs first.

Use Match my level

On the Programs page, enter your German and English levels. Lodestar will only show programs you actually qualify for — no more reading admission pages to discover a hidden C1 German requirement.

Weigh the real cost of the city

Tuition at public universities is low (often around €726/semester for non-EU students), so your biggest cost is living expenses. Vienna is pricier than Graz, Linz, or Klagenfurt.

  • Tuition per year — check whether you're EU/EEA or a third-country national
  • Monthly rent — varies a lot by city and dorm vs. private
  • Proof of funds for the visa — roughly €11,000 for a year

Shortlist, then go deep

Pick 5–8 programs, then read each official page carefully for deadlines and exact requirements.
