Student dorms in Austria, explained
How Studentenheime work, the main providers, and why dorms are usually the safest first move.
6 min read
For most international students, a student dorm (Studentenheim) is the easiest, safest, and often cheapest way to start. They're run by established non-profit providers, contracts are standardized, and they're used to international students.
The main providers
- ÖJAB — Austrian Young Workers Movement, dorms across several cities
- Home4Students — modern dorms in Vienna, Graz, Linz and more
- WIHAST — large provider, especially in Vienna
- STUWO — purpose-built student housing in multiple cities
What dorms typically include
Furnished and bills-inclusive
Most dorm rooms come furnished, with internet and utilities usually bundled into the monthly price. That makes budgeting far simpler than a private flat.
Costs at a glance
Dorm rooms commonly range from around €300–€550/month depending on city, room type (shared vs. single), and provider. Vienna and Innsbruck trend higher; Graz and Linz are gentler.
